Eliminate That "Tech Neck" and Improve Your Posture

Eliminate That “Tech Neck” and Improve Your Posture

By making lifestyle changes with the use of chiropractic care, it naturally brings our bodies back into their proper alignment. Maintaining good posture and ergonomics is an essential component to aid in maintaining our alignment.

In our technological age, more and more people are hunched over at their computers or phones. ”Text necks” is a term in which a person is constantly looking down their phone, iPad, or laptop reducing the curvature in the neck and upper thoracic region. This forward head translation places pressure not only in the upper cervical spine, but throughout the entire spinal cord affecting the low back also. With this poor posture, a wide array of health conditions can arise such as headaches, neck pain, premature aging of the spine, and more.

Use the 90/90 rule when sitting in your chair. Make sure elbows and knees are at 90-degree angles. Keep a lumbar pillow in your chair or seat. Hold your mobile devices at eye level and prop up your computer if necessary. Avoid heavy back packs, purses, or wallets in your back pocket. These tips are just a couple of recommendations that our clinic can help you with.

Are You in Pain? It Could Be More Than What You Believe

Are You in Pain? It Could Be More Than What You Believe

Bulging disc. Herniated disc. Disc protrusion. Pinched nerve.

You may have heard all these phrases to explain severe pain experienced in the neck and back. The most dreaded is the herniated disc. The discs are structures that lay comfortably between your vertebrae, the gel-filled cushions are the shock absorbers of the spine which allow us to bend and twist easily. A disc can herniate or rupture through a tear in the supportive ligaments enclosing one of discs. This can be initiated by:

  1. Sudden injury
  2. Constant stress
  3. Improper lifting or twisting of the spinal column
  4. Degeneration due to neglect

Once the disc is aggravated, the disc material (jelly-like) inflames and applies pressure on the spinal nerves, which may result in pain. In the worst-case scenario, the material can be forced all the way out from between your vertebrae and press on the nerves that branch off the spinal cord. Chiropractors are trained to care for injured discs and are able to correct the cause of the serious life altering condition.

A herniated disc is a serious injury.

Here at Fogarty Life Clinic Chiropractic, we will check your posture, perform a spinal examination, examine spinal range of motion, take x-rays, and may order an MRI (if necessary) to help with the diagnostic process. Chiropractors do not adjust a disc back into place using force, nor can a couple of brief treatment sessions repair your herniated disc. A specific treatment plan can be designed with gentle and specific adjustment techniques, a disc can be repaired and restore you to your regular self. We additionally offer spinal decompression which is also proven to help.

In addition, we will do a thorough examination to see what your spine feels like and how it moves. What You Can Do to Boost Your Immune System

What You Can Do to Boost Your Immune System

You can help your body increase its ability to fight off the common cold, flu, and infections, both bacterial and viral in nature, with these simple ideas.  Use this information as your first line of defense in restoring your immune system along with regular chiropractic adjustments.

  1. Increase your daily intake of Vitamin C to 1,000-3,000 mg in divided doses. Vitamin C promotes healing and increases your body’s immune response.  Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, meaning that your body uses what it needs and whatever is left over is given back to nature.  In order to get the necessary amount of vitamin C from orange juice, you would have to drink five to six gallons a day.
  2. Increase your daily intake of Vitamin D to 5,000-10,000 IU. Getting enough vitamin D is not only important for maintaining healthy bones, but also helps improve resistance against certain diseases, reduces the risk of the flu, and helps with depression and energy levels.
  3. Start taking up to 30 mg of zinc daily.
  4. Drinking at least a half gallon of water a day helps your body flush toxins out your system and will stimulate your body’s own natural defense. If you drink coffee, alcohol, tea, or sodas, replace that volume of liquid with more water. These are all diuretics that rob your body of water.
  5. Gargling with warm salt water is also very beneficial.  The salt water changes the pH level in your mouth and throat, thus acting as a barrier to bacteria or virus.
  6. Discontinue consuming all dairy products. Dairy produces mucus which feeds bacteria and virus making them stronger.
  7. Get Adjusted! When your spine is adjusted, your body will be given the best chance that it has to fight off infections.  Scientists have found that people who receive regular chiropractic adjustments have superior immune systems. Remember the nervous system controls the immune system.

Are You Wrapping Christmas Gifts on the Floor?

Are You Wrapping Christmas Gifts on the Floor?

During these busy holiday times, do you consider your spinal health?

When it comes to gift wrapping, many people tend to sit on their floor instead of at a table to wrap their gifts. As a result, without knowing, this creates an increased amount of pressure placed upon the low back and your SI joints. Sitting alone places more pressure, more pounds, per square inch into the lumbar spine. By sitting on the floor, it doubles with more weight applied to the sacrum, where there is a potential to alter the integrity and curvature of your spine.

In some positions while sitting on the floor, the weight of your upper body is placed on your lower limbs. This can place extra stress on your knees and ankles, as well as other joints. Existing joint problems can be exacerbated, especially with the hips and pelvis. When you go to stand up, it is straining the knees. Also, the load of your upper body decreases circulation in your lower limbs resulting in reduced blood circulation.

Here are a few recommendations while wrapping your Christmas gifts:

  1. Clear your dining room or kitchen table of all the junk for a clean working surface.
  2. If sitting, use a back support for the lower spine and avoid sitting over 30 minutes.
  3. If standing, place one foot on a step stool to change your center of gravity.
  4. Do not make a marathon of it. Frequent breaks reduce muscle fatigue.
  5. Remember that it is the holiday season, have some fun!

Here at Fogarty Chiropractic, we have a variety of suggestions and offer to help with your low back pain. You do not want to have low back pain to ruin your holiday fun. Schedule your appointment today at (321) 636-5200.

Preventing Injury Throughout the Holiday Season

Preventing Injury Throughout the Holiday Season

In the midst of the holiday season, there is nothing worse than getting hurt and having to sit on the sidelines while everyone else is having fun.

Let us give you a few suggestions:

  1. Be aware and careful of your outside surroundings. Tripping hazards are everywhere. (extension cords, gifts, new toys)
  2. Create time for yourself to remain active. Remember the more you do for yourself, the more you can do for your loved ones. (exercise, meditate, do yoga, date night)
  3. Be careful on how you decorate. Use a ladder, not the rocking chair to hang your ornaments
  4. Wear appropriate and supportive footwear.
  5. Be cautious on how you play with the children. Piggy back rides can be a hazard for one’s spinal health.

If something were to happen, don’t hesitate or try to wait out the pain. Remember the 5 most dangerous words, ‘maybe it will go away.”
