Most People With Scoliosis Can Lead Normal Lives With Chiropractic Care

Do you have or know someone who has scoliosis?

If so, do you think it is impossible to get your spine to straighten into proper alignment due to a curve? Normally, your spine is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae that stack up on top of the other to form a straight line when viewed from front to back. With adults, those 33 vertebrae reduce to 24 because some vertebrae fuse together towards the bottom of the end of the spine during normal growth and development.

When a spine curves or twists excessively side to side, it is called scoliosis. The cause of scoliosis, in most cases, remains a mystery as the spinal structures appear to be normal.  There are rare cases that cause scoliosis, such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. However, poor posture is not a cause of scoliosis. Some people with scoliosis can lead normal lives without knowing they have the condition. Even through scoliosis is not lethal, a few or more people can have breathing or heart problems if the curve is very severe. In addition, research on scoliosis shows an important contributing factor may be a disturbance or defect in the nervous system that controls posture, body balance, and positioning.

The purpose of chiropractic care is to correct the subluxations that may be contributing to scoliosis. A subluxation is a condition that interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system and the body as a whole. Recent research suggesting that scoliosis may be caused by a neurological defect reinforces the validity of the chiropractic approach.
